Coup attempts aim to seize power by taking down the governments in democratic states of law which took office by getting elected by national will via military interventions. The aforementioned goal causes the text of the social contract, the Constitution, not to be recognized and be suspended. Moreover, these unlawful interventions cause the national will to be ignored and thus, cause the right of civil society to develop to be violated. Coups and coup attempts have devastating effects on many human rights guaranteed at constitutional and legal levels starting with right to life and right to freedom. Every coup attempt not only damages states' reputation as modern, democratic national identities at the international arena but also causes political and economic recession.

There are many instances of militaristic interventions and coup attempts in our history which targetted the ideal of the democratic republic on the basis of national sovereignty. One of those nefarious attempts was carried out by Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETÖ) by trying to harm democratic political regime and constitutional order on 15 July 2016. This nefarious coup attempt which happened against the national will in the democratic political order was suppressed with the Turkish nation's active citizenship awareness and faith in democracy. The noble resistance of the public's will in the night of July 15 has shown our nation's determination in protecting their fundamental rights and freedoms and democracy.

As Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye, we condemn the nefarious coup attempt of July 15 which targets the democratic political order and violates the guarantees of fundamental right and freedom and celebrate July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.
