On August 13, 2024, it was reported in both visual and written media that hundreds of Israeli radicals, under the protection of Israeli police, carried out a raid on the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Concerns about assaults towards the inside of the mosques have been expressed. (1)

The attack of thousands of fanatics accompanied by Israeli ministers, politicians, and members of parliament is the continuation of the genocide and war crimes which are systemically committed by Israel before the entire world since 7 October 2023. Massacres targeting civilians in hospitals, places of worship, school, and civilian settlements in complete denial of international law and human rights norms getting more intense with each day is the most obvious indicator of Israel's atrocities and the fact that they are far from being pro-peace.  According to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, it is prohibited to target historical and religious sites during armed conflict, and and it is stipulated that these buildings shall be protected.

As the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye, we once again condemn the systematic and widespread attacks carried out by Israel against the civilian population in Gaza, which constitute war and genocide crimes within the scope of the Rome Statute, and we call on all actors of the international community to take action to end these atrocities and to take the necessary steps to ensure lasting peace in the region.
