Beginning in Samsun, 19 May is the first step to the liberation of Turkish people. Veteran Mustafa Kemal Atatürk gifted the day of 19 May 1919 on which he landed at Samsun to start the War of Independence to Turkish youth to whom he entrusted the Republic due to its historical significance.

As an indicator of how much the youth is valued, protection of the youth is enshrined in the Constitution. According to the Article 58 of the Constitution, "The State shall take measures to ensure the education and development of the youth into whose keeping our independence and our Republic are entrusted, in the light of positive science, in line with the principles and reforms of Atatürk, and in opposition to ideas aiming at the destruction of the indivisible integrity of the State with its territory and nation. The State shall take necessary measures to protect youth from addiction to alcohol and drugs, crime, gambling, and similar vices, and ignorance." In the Article 59 of the Constitution, it is regulated that the State shall take measures to develop the physical and mental health of Turkish citizens of all ages, and encourage the spread of sports among the masses. In addition, Ministry of Youth and Sports which was established especially for the needs and activities of the youth in our country has been continuing their works since 1969.

Although there are no international human rights convention which specifically regulates the rights of the youth, the youth has all the fundamental rights and freedoms like every citizen without any discrimination. These rights are also guaranteed with the laws and international human rights conventions to which Türkiye is party to, starting with the Constitution. Policy papers regarding the protection of the youth's human rights and supporting their complete and equal participation to social life are also adopted. In addition to these, many young persons can face discrimination and various obstacles in exercising their rights mainly because of their age. In line with this, the human rights of the youth means the youth benefiting from fundamental rights and freedoms fully and equally.

HREIT, main mission of which is to guarantee persons' right to equal treatment on the basis of human dignity and prevent discrimination in the enjoyment of legally recognized rights and freedoms, continues its duties within the framework of its institutional mission with the awareness of its responsibilities regarding the protection and promotion of rights of the youth and celebrates the May 19 the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day
