On 18 December 2014, United Nations declared 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day in order to raise awareness on albinism in the entire world, to combat discrimination against individuals with albinism and increase the visibility and voices of individuals with albinism in all fields of life.
Albinism, a non-contagious congenital genetic condition which is estimated to affect 17.000 people in the world, can be seen in every part of the world regardless of ethnic origin or sex, causes vulnerability in hair, eyes, and skin due to lack of pigmentation (melanin). This lack of pigmentation makes persons with albinism very vulnerable to skin cancer risk and this means that it is of vital importance that they are supported regular health checks, sun protection tools and medical equipment.
On the other hand, due to some negative attitudes, persons with albinism are socially excluded on many grounds, especially health and disability, and face discrimination.
Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye, main mission of which is to protect the right to equal treatment of persons on the basis of human dignity and prevention of discrimination in exercising the legally acknowledged rights and freedoms, celebrates 13 June International Albinism Awareness Day with the hopes of a world where the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons with albinism are under effective protection, where they are able to fully participate in life under equal conditions as other individuals.
Respectfully announced to the public.
