With the reforms after the declaration of republic, great progress on women's rights were made. In the social life, the right to vote and be elected of women who gained lots of rights especially right to education and civil rights was occasionally brought to agenda during this period. With the amendments to the Constitution and law since 1930, women in our country got the right to vote and be elected a lot earlier than Western countries. Within this scope, with the amendment to Election Law on 5 November 1930, women were given the right to vote and be elected in municipality elections. With another amendment in 1933, women were given the right to become muhtar and elect the village council.

Women who gained the right to vote and be elected in local elections, finallygained the right to elect and be elected as members of parliament with the amendment to the Constitution and Election Law made on 5 December 1934. In the vote held in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, women were given the right to elect and be elected as members of parliament with the amendment made to the Constitution with the votes of all 258 deputies out of 317 members who participated in the vote. Thus, in the first general elections of 1935, 17 women MPs got the right to enter the Parliament.

Our Institution, main mission of which is to protect the right to equal treatment of persons on the basis of human dignity and prevention of discrimination in exercising the legally acknowledged rights and freedoms, On the occasion of 5 December Women's Rights Day, emphasizes that women's right to vote and be elected is one of the most fundamental elements of democratic societies, and celebrates 5 December Women's Rights Day.
